Doves are crying

Prince died today. I used to listen to his music a lot when I was younger. His passing is certainly a loss to the music community.

He was bold. In 2000, he famously changed his name to a symbol, and would be referred to in writing as “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince”. What a lot of people don’t know about this name change is that at the time Prince was having a fight with his record company, Warner, after he signed a restrictive contract with it. He made the very interesting argument that the name “Prince” was his birth name and was the asset owned by Warner, so by changing his name, he felt that he could escape the record company. This was a dare to Warner records, and made public his frustration about the control being wielded by it.

His boldness was in defiance of a big record label. Not many artists are willing to fight with their label – that kind of fight is one of copyright.

I was looking for “Doves Cry” after hearing about him dying. Unfortunately, the owners of some of his music (including him) are very litigious, and tend to ask YouTube and similar sites to remove music once found. Some may remember the lawsuit in 07-08 involving the mother videotaping her kid with a Prince song in the background (article here). I haven’t even found the Chappelle Show clip of the True Hollywood Story about the basketball game between Charlie Murphy and crew and Prince and his entourage, which unfortunately (I think) is how many people know who Prince is (at least unless told otherwise).

Without a doubt, his legacy will be around for a long time – easily the next hundred years.
